Forge of Empires – Game Review
Forge of Empires is a browser based village sim strategy game developed by InnoGames. Your mission in this game is to build your city from the Stone Age to the future. You decide how you progress through the epochs. Will you gain power, status and wealth through war, diplomacy or a mixture of both?
Diplomacy and War – While the combat is nothing special this game does make diplomacy very interesting. Instead of attacking to obtain estates you have the option of negotiating with their NPC rulers. If you don’t have the forces to defeat an army you can meet the economic needs of the ruler to arrange to purchase the contended territory.
Cooperation – Forge of Empires gives you only X of Y resources and you have to negotiate in the market place to trade your own goods for the goods you are missing. This is both highly realistic and incredibly satisfying. Working the marketplace for the best deals is the most fun I have had in a village builder to date.
Requires Strategy – You can’t just max out your population with huts you also have to provide happiness for your subjects or productivity will plummet and your empire will crumble. You need to have a healthy balance of resources, production, military and population to thrive in this game. You also have to evaluate yourself as a player. Do you play regularly or once a day? Certain structures should be avoided or pursued depending on how often you’ll be checking in.
Multi-platform – You can play Forge of Empires on your phone by downloading the app or you can log in on the website when you are at your PC. At this time there is more functionality with the web browser version but the app is slowly adding in these features!
Repetitive – There isn’t a whole lot of variation in game-play. You build, you collect, you build some more. Your first production building will be much like your last production building. You invest some resources, you wait some time and you get a product. The icons and costs might be different but the process is very redundant.
Tech Tree – This game has a long winding research tree that requires you to navigate through the historical ages. From the Stone Age to the future you’ll have fun exploring the different technologies available in each age and advance your little civilization with the baby steps of progress. Be careful how quickly you develop, you could put yourself in a difficult position if you don’t develop evenly!
Cash Investment – This is a rare game in that you have the ability to invest money to expedite things but it does not equate to paying to win. You can accomplish nearly everything in this game that someone with a limitless budget can. With that said you can save yourself some wait time by investing a little coin to get you past a difficult task and there is nothing wrong with feeding the developers families.
